AnneFrankwasborninFrankfurt-am-Main,Germanyon12thJune1929,thesecondchildofOttoandEdithFrank.In1933HitlerhadcometopowerandwastakingmoreandmoremeasuresagainsttheJews.TheFrankfamilyfearedwhatthefuturemightholdiftheystayedinGermany.WhenOttoreceivedanoffertostartanewcompanyinAmsterdam,thefamilydecidedtomovetotheNetherlands.Annewasalivelyandfun-lovinglittlegirlwhohadlotsoffriends.ShewenttoaMontessorischoolwithhersisterMargot,alsoextremelybrightandclever.In1940HitlerinvadedtheNetherlandsandgraduallyimposedtheirrestrictionsontheJews.OttotransferredhisbusinesstohistrustedcolleaguesJohannesKleimanandVictorKuglerandbeganpreparingthesecretannexeconnectedtotheofficewarehouseforhiding.Annewasgivenherdiaryonher13thbirthdayin1942,andsheimmediatelybeganwritinginitaboutherfamily,friendsandschool.Amonthlater,Margot,likethousandsofotheryoungJews,receivedacall-upnoticeandwasorderedtoreporttotheSS.Thatevening,thefamilymovedintothesecretannexeand,withthehelpofKleimanandKugler,andemployeesMiepSantrouschitzandBepVoskuijl,theyremainedinhidingforthenexttwoyears.AnnediedinBergen-BelsenconcentrationcampnearHanover(Germany)inFebruaryorearlyMarchl945,justdaysafterhersister,Margot,andonlyafewweeksbeforethecampwasliberatedbyBritishtroops.
