      托·布尔芬奇（Thomas　Bulfinch,1796-1867）原不过是波士顿商业银行一名小职员，长达30年地从事这一卑微的工作，默默无闻。自其1855年出版《希腊罗马神话》、1858年推出《骑士时代》、1862年印行《查理曼大帝传奇》之后，他的“布尔芬奇神话集”被不断翻印，深得读者喜欢，使其“在美国文学最伟大的五年的那些伟大者之中，占有了永久的一席”（坎贝尔语）。曾经卑微的托·布尔芬奇之所以伟大，之所以在美国乃至世界神话研究史与创作史上有着举足轻重的地位，是因为其坚持传播神话知识以方便年轻读者了解和欣赏语文中的许多优秀文学作品，创造为人们不时引用而不专为博学家、神学家、哲学家们服务的神话佳作，成就了古典神话遗产英语译介读物中的一座丰碑。老一辈资深出版家杨坚翻译的《希腊罗马神话》，曾于1987年由湖南人民出版社出版，译笔清新酣畅，装帧大方精致，纸墨佳好满眼，得孙犁、罗念生、张舜徽等大家极力推重，后再三重版；今有岳麓书社除在装帧设计与编排款式上保留原来格调外，以博采优选的形式增益新的插图，并对原有图画作求真保质的技术处理，甚是悦目，耐得细读。　一本非原典性的研究作品，解读两千多年前的希腊罗马神话，且能使得作者以一个名不见经传的小人物身份一举成名，足见其从荷马、维吉尔、奥维德的史诗及其他古典著作中取材进行二度创作的方式，是可能出现而无法忽略的成功。托·布尔芬奇运用优雅雅洁的文字，形诸文字迷人且生命力旺盛的《希腊罗马神话》，生动地讲述了古希腊罗马诸神和英雄们的身世来源、传奇经历；同时对古人所创造的天神与凡人、英雄的平民、巨人与侏儒以及神巫与怪兽，进行了深入浅出、通俗易懂的勾画。古希腊人的想象力是独特神奇的，不粉饰光明情爱，也不遮掩隐恶假丑，创作出的神话如同史诗一般伟美。他们虽在命运面前总是无法逆反，但以自己的生活和形象，量身打造神，虚拟无所不能的神，创造了奥林匹斯山和奥林匹亚神系，诸如宙斯、波塞冬、雅典娜、阿波罗、维纳斯、库比德和后来为人类偷火却被兄弟宙斯百般折磨的普罗米修斯等一系列代表各个方面各个领域的神灵。坐镇奥林匹斯山的宙斯，既是众神之王，也是人类之王，拥有无上的权力和力量。但万能的宙斯，以贪花好色著称，除有过三任正式妻子外，还同不少女神和凡间女子生过不少子女，或为监管一方的天界神祇，或为半人半神的人间英雄。正因如此，不论是希腊神话中宙斯一脉，还是罗马更名不换人的朱庇特一系，成就了希腊罗马神话的丰富多彩、源远流长。我们在从中看到了普罗米修斯之火、斯芬克斯之谜、风神的皮囊、奥狄浦斯情结、阿基琉斯之踵、潘多拉的盒子，看到了尤诺对情敌们的怨恨、维纳斯与阿多尼斯的畸恋、阿波罗对雅辛托斯的痴爱，看到了帕里斯燎原的特洛伊战火、众神捉弄奥德修艰难回乡、赫拉克勒斯与狮子搏斗杀死九头蛇冲洗奥革阿斯牛栏……一切的一切，都是丰裕、美丽的。无怪乎，这些神与英雄、人与鬼怪的较量角力的故事传说，肇始了西方文化和文明的源头，为数千年来的诗歌、戏剧、绘画和雕塑等文艺形式，提供了取之不竭的源泉。《希腊罗马神话》中所引用的弥尔顿、华兹华斯、拜伦、雪莱、济慈、朗费罗、席勒等40家160余节佳句名段，洋洋大观，就是希腊罗马神话影响后来作家诗人的一个很好注解。

      　　托·布尔芬奇《希腊罗马神话》初版名曰《神话时代》。杨坚选取删去零散内容的企鹅版《希腊罗马神话》，突出重点，保持原汁，在凸显文学性与趣味性的同时，间插古希腊罗马雕像、瓶饰，以及文艺复兴时期以来达·芬奇、拉斐尔、波提切利、提香、毕加索、普吕东等名家绘画60余帧，且在订正文字、推敲译诗、加设译注、专业翻译上，都有尊重原稿而不以讹传讹的创新。书末附录“神祇谱系表”引发读者兴趣，编辑“专名索引”方便读者查阅，足见译者所花心思之到位矣。

      　　写到这里，我不得不做一比较，发轫西方文明的神话、史诗通俗易译，迄今已在全球传播；而肇源东方文明的神话、诗辞古奥难译，稍微外人赞叹就以为博大精深。我们能否学学托·布尔芬奇，通俗易懂且深入浅出地阐释原典，吸引外人走近东方文化的源头，岂不对辉煌中国文化大有裨益。
