      《弃儿汤姆·琼斯的历史》是菲尔丁的代表作品。就作品反映现实的广度和深度来说，这部作品可以称为英国18世纪社会的散文史诗。全书共分18卷，人物有四十多个。《弃儿汤姆·琼斯的历史》在艺术上也有很高的成就。英国著名诗人柯勒律治认为这部作品的情节，是一切文学当中最完美的情节之一，它的结构是英国小说的典范。亨利·菲尔丁（1707—1754）。英国作家，少年时代在英国伊顿公学接受教育，后去荷兰莱登大学专修法律，课余自修古典文学及哲学。大学肄业后。在伦敦以写剧本为生。不久之后剧院被政府查封，遂放弃戏剧创作，成为一名律师，同时又兼营报刊。撰写文学评论、杂文、小说等。菲尔丁一生共撰写20余部喜剧，主要以讥讽朝政为主要题材。并在当时风靡一时。共计创作5部长篇小说：《大伟人江奈生·魏尔德传》、《沙米拉·安德鲁斯传》、《约瑟夫·安德鲁斯传》、《弃儿汤姆·琼斯的历史>、《阿米丽亚》。
      亨利·菲尔丁最重要的代表作就是《弃儿汤姆·琼斯的历史》，作品篇幅宏大、内容广泛、艺术手法纯熟，用写实的手法，描述了17世纪资产阶级政治革命与18世纪工业革命之间的社会现实和生活百态。该书以私生子为主人公。对当时封建等级观念和制度提出挑战。男女主人公争取自由婚姻，反抗封建礼教，反映了当时社会下层青年男女寻求自由、平等和解放的要求。这部小说在叙述角度、结构、人物塑造等方面都富有创造性。并继承和发扬了英国幽默讽刺文学的传统，被视为英国小说发展史上的里程碑。
