Withsuchelitismcomesarroganceandarigidadherencetohideboundtradition.Andfortheflyers,allowingjustanyonetojointheircadreisanideathatbordersonheresy.Wingsaremeantonlyfortheoffspringofflyers—nowthenewnobilityofWindhaven.Exceptthatsometimeslifeisnotquitesoneat.
MarisofAmberly,afisherman'sdaughter,wasraisedbyaflyerandwantsnothingmorethantosoaronthecurrentshighaboveWindhaven.Bytradition,however,thewingsmustgotoherstepbrother,Coll,theflyer'slegitimateson.ButCollwantsonlytobeasinger,travelingtheworldbysea.SoMarischallengestradition,demandingthatflyersbechosenonthebasisofmeritratherthaninheritance.Andwhenshewinsthatbitterbattle,shediscoversthathertroublesareonlybeginning.
