      1946年，奇夫利政府与英国克莱门特·艾德礼政府结成平等伙伴关系，在伍默拉建立了一个制导武器试验靶场与村镇，并在阿德莱德郊区索尔兹伯里附近设立了庞大的研发设施。这便是战后澳大利亚历史上最具色彩、代价高昂且高度保密的事件之一——英澳联合项目的开端。
       
      伍默拉和远程武器试验基地的规划与建设，深受德国V型武器、冷战阴影、与美国的分歧，以及核武器弹道导弹将彻底改变战争形态这一事实的影响。在那个焦虑的时代，伍默拉见证了多种制导武器和“林迪维克”靶机的研发与测试，也推动了当时西方世界最大陆基靶场的建设与发展。该靶场鼎盛时期横跨大陆，一直延伸至西北海岸，曾经的沙漠小镇伍默拉也发展成为拥有六千居民的繁华社区。伍默拉还迎来了“黑骑士”等大型液体燃料研究火箭；20世纪50年代末，哈特湖畔修建了庞大设施，用于测试英国独立核威慑力量“蓝条纹”导弹。
       
      20世纪60年代，伍默拉主办了多项重大太空项目：国际财团ELDO及其大型三级卫星运载火箭“欧罗巴一号”、英国“黑箭”火箭，以及澳大利亚首颗国产卫星WRESAT。有几年，澳大利亚曾有机会成为航天大国，但因多种原因错失了机遇，伍默拉的发射设施也被拆除。该联合项目按现值计算，耗资数十亿美元，数千人在武器研究基地工作，推动了电子与光学等领域的高科技发展。

      彼得·莫顿生于英国莱斯特，在当地文法学校接受教育，大学就读于伦敦大学，后在萨塞克斯大学完成研究生学业。1972年移居澳大利亚，在弗林德斯大学获得博士学位，随后担任人文研究研究员。莫顿博士在英国和澳大利亚担任多个学术职位，同时兼任职业作家、技术记者和写作顾问。著有《生物学与文学想象1860-1900》（1985年出版），并担任《阿德莱德广告报》和《澳大利亚人报》的书评人。文章与短篇小说常发表于《Quadrant》等学术期刊。他曾在英国、意大利和美国生活工作，现定居阿德莱德，妻子是学者，育有一子。目前担任SCRIBO的总监，该机构为企业和政府客户提供写作咨询服务。
