西方人对中国的误解和偏见、刻板印象从何而来？本书是英国剑桥大学人类学教授艾伦麦克兰的“文明三部曲”之一、文明的比较续篇，是一部长达二十多年的田野调查，探寻汉语圈的特质，研究西方偏见和焦虑的根源。作者从人类学角度，以旁观者的身份观察了会，探讨了西方早期对于中国的焦虑和偏见的根源：无知和恐惧，再加上半遮半掩的政治和经济竞争。麦克兰从字母a出发，行至字母z，从儒家、道家思想，到科举制度与现代科技，再到的谦逊与人际关系，用自己的实地研究刺破这种偏见和焦虑的“泡沫”。同时也为长期生活在汉语圈的人们，提供了另一种观察自己的角度。

作者简介：

[英]艾伦麦克兰（alanmacfarlane），有名历史学家与人类学家，剑桥大学社会人类学教授、剑桥大学国王学院院士、英国学术院院士。麦克兰在剑桥大学执教逾40年，关注现代世界诸文明起源及特的比较研究，研究对象覆盖西欧、东亚等区域，著述30余种，包括文明的比较文明的观察：汉语圈的特质文明的体验：人类学视角下的英国绿英国个人主义的起源等。
