内容摘要 Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an effective approach to teaching foreign languages due to its essence of student engagement and communicative competence. In the realm of educational psychology, researchers have identified many teaching strategies that can have positive effects on students motivation and engagement.Brett D.Jones summarized these strategies and created the MUSIC model of Academic Motivation.MUSIC is an acronym for strategies related to eMpowerment,Usefulness,Success,Interest and Caring. The purpose of this research was to examine the effectiveness of CLT class incorporating the MUSIC model strategies in a university in China.A selfreport survey was used to collect information on studentscourse perceptions and their engagement in the college English class. The results indicated that students in CLT classes perceived more control in the class, found the course to be more useful, were more interested, and perceived more sense of caring from their teacher. Also, students in CLT classes put forth more effort and then achieved more in the English course. In addition, the results revealed that students course perceptions predicted their engagement. These findings suggest that the MUSIC model and the MUSIC model inventory are ideal tools for Chinese college English teachers instructional design.
