ErnestMillerHemingwaywasborninChicagoin1899asthesonofadoctorandthesecondofsixchildren.AfterastintasanambulancedriverattheItalianfront,HemingwaycamehometoAmericain1919,onlytoreturntothebattlefield--thistimeasareporterontheGreco-Turkishwarin1922.Resigningfromjournalismtofocusonhiswritinginstead,hemovedtoPariswhereherenewedhisearlierfriendshipwithfellowAmericanexpatriatessuchasEzraPoundandGertrudeStein.Throughtheyears,Hemingwaytravelledwidelyandwroteavidly,becominganinternationallyrecognizedliterarymasterofhiscraft.HereceivedtheNobelPrizeforLiteraturein1954,followingthepublicationofTheOldManandtheSea.Hediedin1961.
