    Covers:
    The volumes (8vo) are uniformly bound in the original green publisher's cloth stamped in blind to the boards and in gilt to the spine; minor wear to boards and board edges (heavier to Volume 1), some minor soiling, some volumes with light water marks; shelf wear top and tail of spines to varying degrees; binding is sound though joints to volume 1 are heavily rubbed and beginning to form small holes.
    Inside:
    Faint toning to margins throughout; occasional foxing, to varying degrees, some heavy, chiefly to end papers, half titles, titles and opening prelims with the odd margin affected here or there; browning to some end papers and some half titles. 
    Some pages are folded and creased. 
    All with previous owner's sticker J. O. Hitchcock to the front paste downs. 
    With frontispiece in volumes 1 and 2 only; Volume 1 contains 2 leaves of facsimile handwriting and volume 4 bears numerous facsimile autographs in text
    In Volume 1 the opening pages through to xvi in Volume 1 which are all straining and detaching at the bottom; each volume with some pages straining or pulling at the gutter.
    Front inner hinge to Volume 1 is weak.
