Since ancient times, the Chinese people have loved the decorative art of New Year pictures. According to Chinese custom, before the arrival of the lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival and falling generally between January and February on the solar calendar, many families paste New Year pictures'on doors and walls in order to drive away evil, welcome good luck and embellish the festival atmosphere. The subject matter of New Year pictures also adds to their appeal as they include popular folk legends and historical stories. New pictures originated among the common people about 1,800 years ago and, after a long period of development, culminated in the 17th century when woodblock New Year prints surpassed all previous periods in quantity, quality and the technique. At that time, New Year pictures were made in all parts of the country, the most famous centres being Yangliuqing in Tianjin, Taohuawu in Suzhou and Weifang in Shandong Province.
The more than 140 pictures in this album are representative works covering the periods from the Song to the Qing dynasties. Specially featured are works from five regions during the Qing Dynasty. Since the original blocks of most of the pictures have been destroyed, those that remain are and precious.
A commentary explains the development of this folk art, its themes, styles, the techniques used, and the content of each picture.
