Seven million tourists and vast numbers of business people visit the Netherlands each year and many Netherlanders live and work in other countries. These people all have one thing in common - they cherish their own images, their own visions, of this little country by the North Sea. And they share these visions and images, each in their own way, with their friends, their families and their business colleagues, so even those who have never visited the Netherlands have their own vision of it. The 250 photos in 'Visions of the Netherlands' give a modern and realistic image of the country.They show the Netherlands as it is now, and how people see it every day. This book does not confine itself to the capital, Amsterdam, so popular with visitors, but also shows dozens of less visited places, some of which, had they been situated elsewhere, might well have become world famous. It shows the Netherlander in his everyday environment, at work, at play or in his favourite pub.
No one book can pretend to offer a complete picture of a country. This one certainly does not. What it does try to do is to give a broad impression of the Netherlands' many facets, as seen through the eyes of one of her best photographers, a craftsman whose favourite subject is the land he lives in.
The Netherlands is a hospitable country and easy to travel round. We hope that this book will inspire many-both Netherlanders and visitors - to learn more of it and, in the learning, create their very own visions of the Netherlands.
