非馆藏,无任何戳印或笔迹;上册共有184页文字,下册共140页文字,159幅全页插图另算。所有插图均有英文说明,并附字体较小的法文及德文译文;关于作者:奥伦生平 1842年,银版摄影术已经成熟,但大规模制版印刷,还在摸索中。这时,英国出版了一本中国内容的图集,其中每一幅画,对细节真实的再现,可媲美照相,而场景的宏阔与震撼,则是远非照相可及。这本图集中的所有画作,都出自英国画家奥伦之手。他早就是欧洲“地貌画”的名家,这本图集,只是为他锦上添花而已。 奥伦(Thomas Allom, 1804~1872)生于英国伦敦南部的Lambeth,父亲是马车夫。1819年起,他在建筑师古德温(Francis Goodwin)的事务所当学徒,一直工作至1826年。随后他入皇家学院学习建筑设计。入行后,他成了英国的顶尖设计师之一,他设计的大量教堂、图书馆、贫民习艺所等建筑,至今仍矗立在伦敦、利物浦等地。 奥伦是当时历史主义建筑学派的一员,这些人通过广泛旅行,大量绘制所谓的“地貌画”( topographical drawings),来研究古往今来的建筑艺术形式。对奥伦而言,绘画原不过是职业精进的手段,没想手段演进成目的,他也由单一的建筑师,进化为建筑师兼画家的两栖人。而绘画才能的突飞猛进,反使奥伦的建筑设计才华相形见绌。他之所以青史留名,主要也是因他的画作,而非他的建筑设计。 从1820年开始,奥伦便广泛旅行,足迹遍及全英和欧洲大陆。这时,他已开始大量绘制地貌画,主要用作各种旅行书籍的插图。“地貌画”的概念今日已罕用。其实若以当今视角看,奥伦的作品都是典型的风景画或场景画,以风光和建筑为表现的主体,人物反倒次要了。 1834年,他走出了欧洲,去到了土耳其,然后在安娜托利亚、叙利亚、巴勒斯坦行走,作画数百幅,并于1838年出版了《康士坦丁堡暨小亚细亚七个教堂的风光》(Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor),为上下两册。此外,里夫所作的《土耳其与意大利的人物及装束》(Emily Reeve, Character and Costume in Turkey and Italy, London, 1840),也大量采用了奥伦的画作。 中东之行结束后,奥伦便奔赴远东的中国。对当时的欧洲人而言,中国只是商人、教士和士兵的目的地,赴华的建筑师屈指可数,奥伦是其中之一。中国之行让奥伦发现了宝库,对一个欧洲人来说,中国的绘画元素之丰富,实在超乎想象,让他亢奋不已。他下笔如有神,创作的佳作无数。回国后,便出版了《古老中华帝国的风光、建筑及社会习俗图景》(《中华帝国图景》)一书。The Chinese Empire Illustrated Being a Series of Views from Original SketchesDisplaying the Scenery, Architecture, Social Habits of that Ancient and Exclusive NationBy Thomas AllomWith historical and descriptive letter press, by the Rev. Each volume has two extra engraved pictorial titles (in Vol 2 the second title is found on page 92).The plates are from original drawings and sketches by Thomas Allom.The books are in very good antiquarian condition and are beautifully bound in brown leather and attractive brown cloth boards. The spines have seven ribbed compartments and are ornamented with gold gilt, and the titles in gold gilt. Internally the books are in very good condition and the plates are very clean. The hinges on both volumes are strong and firm. Many images have been provided below in order that you can see the contents and condition of the books.The famous engravings cover a multitude of subjects to do with China in the mid 1800’s including the European Factories in Canton, a Diiner Party at a Mandarins House, the Bamboo Aqueduct in Hong Kong, the Cat Merchants and Tea Dealers at Tong-Chow-Foo, the Harbor of Hong Kong, The City of Nanking, Rice sellers at the Military Station of Ton-Chang-Foo, Punishment of the Pan-Tze or Bastinado, A Marriage Procession, Opium Smokers and many other fascinating illustrations.
