The authors of this book offer new and refreshing answers to these old questions. They argue that most scholars (and popular authors) have been too deeply influenced by a disputable frame of ethnological thinking. Whereas social construction, categorization and ethnic or racially motivated exclusion have also been of importance for the coming about of various ethnic groups amongst the Travellers. The authors urge the necessity for putting these kind of studies into a general historical and sociological frame. By doing so, links can be made to much wider processes of nationalism, state-formation, migration and ethnicity. Their analyses of the social and economic history of Gypsies and other itinerant groups also offer new insights in their functioning on the labour market.

About the Author： LEO LUCASSEN is a Project Manager at the Centre for the History of Migrants at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. With his work on Gypsies he won, in 1996, the prestigious Veegens Prize of the Dutch Academy of Sciences. He is now focusing on the long term development of alien policies, government control of labour migrants and the settlement of immigrants in various local settings. In this last field of study he is closely collaborating with Annemarie Cottaar. Thanks to a substantial `pioneer-grant' from NWO, in January 1998 Lucassen will be appointed at the University of Amsterdam as an Associate Professor and Director of a Research Group (in which Ms Cottaar will also participate) on immigration and settlement processes in The Netherlands in the 19th and 20th centuries. Together with Professor Hoerder of the University of Bremen, he chairs the `Ethnicity-network' of the `European Social Science History Conference'.
WIM WILLEMS and ANNEMARIE COTTAAR are also Project Managers at the Centre for the History of Migrants at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied Dutch Literature and did a course in Social History at Leiden University while she studied History at the same university. Willems and Cottaar (man and wife) jointly wrote an MA thesis which was published as a book in 1984. An article, based on this research, won a prize at the Dutch conference on Social Sciences in that same year. In 1987 Willems and Cottaar started working for the Centre of Research on Social Conflicts at Leiden University, where they wrote several books on ethnic minorities. Further, from 1989 onwards Willems organized annual congresses on the history of Dutch Eurasians, a theme which combines migration-studies and colonial history. He has edited five volumes with articles on this subject (in Dutch). Since 1988 Willems and his two fellow-historians Cottaar and Lucassen have concentrated on Travelling Groups, especially Gypsies and Caravan-dwellers. Willems is currently working on an NWO-grant on the history of Dutch Eurasians, a job for which he switched to the Institute for Migration and Ethic Studies, University of Amsterdam. In 1993 he founded, together with Lucassen and Cottaar, the Centre for the History of Migrants, an inter-university research programme which aims at promoting academic research into migration-history.
