There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless bushes for an hour in the morning. But since dinner, the cold winter wind had brought with it such dark clouds and cold rain that further outdoor exercise was now out of the question. I was glad of it. I never liked long walks, especially on cold afternoons. It felt awful to come home with frozen Fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the scolding from our nurse Bessie, and feeling so small next to my cousins, Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed.
My three cousins were now gathered round Aunt Reed, their mother, in the drawing-room. She was laying on a sofa by the Fireside, and with her darlings about her, looked perfectly happy. She had forbidden me from joining the group, saying that, "Until she heard from Bessie that I was making an honest attempt to acquire a more sociable and childlike manner, she really must refuse me the privileges intended only for contented, happy little children."
