    最美丽的《塞尔彭自然史》，两卷分别是427,443页。上卷48幅全页插图，无数小插图；下卷47幅全页插图，无数小插图，另外还有几副折页。插图由名家 J.G. Keulemans, Herbert Railton, Edmund J Sullivan绘制，前者的鸟画得惟妙惟肖。值得收藏。

    吉尔伯特•怀特是一位对英国博物学家达尔文（Charles Darwin，1809－1882）产生过深远影响的学者。怀特对物种和气候的细致观测与描述诱发了少年达尔文对生物学的浓厚兴趣，并对其科学研究提供了具体的方法论指导。我国散文家周作人先生曾经撰文评论说，怀特“的个性乃是这些尺牍的主要的妙处，因为他虽是很谦逊极静默，他的精神却在每页上都照耀着”。
    怀特出身于一个牧师家庭，祖孙两代都和英国的乡间小镇Selborne有着密切关系。在牛津大学Oriel学院取得文学学士学位后，怀特于1744年担任该学院的研究员。此后怀特又回到家乡，一直过着单身的、隐士般的生活，与鸟兽鱼虫为伴，细听自然风雨，山林涛声，静观燕雀的嬉戏。大约在1767年，怀特开始与Thomas Pennant通信往来，这位Thomas Pennant是威尔士博物学家、《不列颠动物学志》的作者。怀特写信主要是咨询有关鸟类和动物的生活习性，这些信件起初并无任何发表的意图，纯粹是私人交流，然而随后友人建议这么有价值的素材不应束之高阁，而应公开发表，怀特听从了这个意见，又人工假造并补充了九封信，放在书信集的最前头，权当序言的功能，细心的读者可以从风格和语气上分辨出两部分之间的差别。这些书信集结集出版成为现在的《塞尔彭自然史》
    怀特的作品本不应该进入文学选读的领域，国外几乎所有纯文学的选集都没有收录他的作品，人们心里仿佛存在着一种默契，不约而同地把他划归到了自然科学领域。然而《塞尔彭自然史》历经二百多年依然畅销不衰，这绝不是自然科学所能解答的谜。虽然部分纯学术性书籍能够在一定时期内引起轰动，对人类社会生活带来巨大影响，可是它们在时间面前却显得苍白无力，除了专业研究工作者之外，还有多少人会不断地翻阅200年前的自然科学巨作呢？人类科学技术的飞速发展很快就将那些学术著作抛在了时代飞奔的轨道上。如此“残酷”的事实仿佛无法解释“怀特现象”，在信息时代的今天，《塞耳彭自然史》为何依旧是经久不衰的畅销书呢？我们理当试着从作品的文学性上寻找答案。
    怀特的作品第一个特点就是清新，仿佛沉闷的房间里敞开了一扇窗户，让人顿感一种遥远和飘忽的芬芳。在十八世纪理性的激烈冲撞中，难得有人将公众的注意力引向纯自然的画卷；与十八世纪说教性质的主流文学截然不同，怀特人为地营造了一种具有浓郁英国风味的世外桃源，不同读者可以从中得到不同的心灵感受，这种“天我合一”的意境本是中国传统文化的一部分，然而在西方因未成传统而尤显难能可贵。不过这种风格比中国文化更进一步是，怀特将培根所倡导的科学实验和观察，结合到人类对自然的情感流露中，这种独特的方式是怀特对于西方文学的重大贡献，它的影响是深远的；最直接的贡献就是文学的魅力促进了科学（博物学）的发展，使人类意识到他们本身是自然中的一个组成部分；其次，怀特的作品也为十九世纪浪漫主义的兴起提供了素材，使“自然”这个主题在英国文学中得到了强化，产生了与德国、法国浪漫主义稍有不同的侧重面。再次，在今天的科普作品中，我们还能感受到怀特对整个西方文化带来的或多或少的余热，例如美国《国家地理》系列影片，倍受欢迎的法国影片《鸟的迁徙》等。美国浪漫主义诗人、评论家Lowell(1819-1891)认为：自然赋予了这些作家简单的技法，使他们从廉价的素材中创造出愉悦感，而这些素材廉价得连我们中最穷的人都可垂手而得。善良的山野仙女教他们用稻草编织出黄金的衣服。英国浪漫主义大师Coleridge在他的《塞尔彭自然史》边页上写下了：a sweet delightful book。怀特的创作是从心（heart）开始，这是浪漫主义的精髓，而非十八世纪那种头脑（head）的创作。
