His flowering prose elaborates the rather furious divisions of religious sects, political parties, classes and races: "The Asians and Pacific Islanders, it was argued, were doomed for the wall, while the Europeans must avoid the fate of Humpty Dumpty." If you thought North America's culture wars of race, religion, and capitalism have been nasty, Clark delivers a lofty verdict on such foolishness in Australia. The book ends about 1985, and does so on an unapologetically grouchy note. For example: "Mammon had won: Mammon had infected the ancient continent of Australia. The dreams of humanity had ended in an age of ruins." It takes a grand old man to spew it out like that. John D. Croft 4.0 out of 5 starsA reasonably good summary 22 February 2008 - Published on Amazon.com Whilst having nothing of the sweeping grandeur or personal analysis of character of the original, thyis is a useful potted summary of Clark's view of history as the drama of a transfer of a civilisation into a silent land. Clark has been attacked and vilified by the John Howard "black armband" of history theorists who want history to be all about glorifying a jingoistic nationalism, and sweeping the difficulties under the carpet. Although vilified as being "left wing" Clark's history doesn't fit neatly into categories. It comes closer to Greek History or Gibbon's "Decline and Fall" category, than any other history of Australia yet written. 2 people found this helpful. Cut down by Clark himself, it is still an outstanding read, written before too much revisionist history has taken place.
